Our Mission

Thank you for taking a moment to look at us. We are an Independent Fundamental Baptist Church and our goal here at Cornerstone is to be a Christ-centered, family-oriented ministry. We want everything we do to show Christ to our families and friends. To accomplish this goal, we focus on the preaching and teaching of God’s Word. The Bible is God’s message of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ. We want you to know Him better and then live to serve him more faithfully.

Since the Bible is relevant to every person of every age, we have designed our ministries to encourage you, your family, and your friends to grow in your walk with Christ. Compassionate teaching and practical application from God’s Word can strengthen your home and make it everything God wants it to be. Even children learn to minister to others as part of the family of Christ. We desire to assist parents as they guide their children toward spiritual maturity.

What To Expect

What should I wear?

Cornerstone does not have a specific dress code. However, our pastors and ministry leaders are expected to dress professionally. For the rest of the congregation, feel free to dress your best or casually. Come as you are!

What Bible version should I use?

Pastor Jim Howard preaches out of the New King James Version (NKJV) although you don’t need to have this version if you prefer something different. We also recommend the New International Version (NIV), New Living Translation (NLT), English Standard Version (ESV), and New American Standard Bible (NASB).

History

God’s influence in a new beginning… When God is in something, nothing remains the same.

Prayers have been said, tears have been shed, as the invisible hand of God has lead us to this moment of time. 59 members and friends attended the first prayer service and business meeting under lay pastor Stanley Dulaney on Wednesday, April 19, 1989, at the Darrell Sandison’s home. Worship for the next two Sunday’s also occurred there. At a midweek prayer service and business meeting on May 3, 1989, our church name, Cornerstone Baptist Church, received an 80% majority vote. Jesus is our Cornerstone!

Sunday, May 7, and Sunday, May 14, 1989 the Lord provided a place of Worship at the former Emmanuel Baptist Church located at 3687 N. Euclid Avenue. On May 17, the vote passed to lease the building for one year. A lot of growth occurred during this first year and on July 1, 1990, the congregation celebrated and dedicated their newly purchased building (at our current location) and installed their first pastor, Rev. Stephen M. Etner and his family.

Over the years, the building, the pastors, some of the congregation have changed. But one thing remains the same… Our God! Yesterday, today, and forever.

Jesus is our Cornerstone.

Core Beliefs

We believe in the authority and sufficiency of the Bible, consisting of the 66 books, as originally written. We believe the Bible to be the true center of Christian unity.

We believe there is one and only one living and true God. In the unity of God, there are three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, equal in every divine perfection.

We believe that Jesus was 100% man and 100% God, conceived by the Holy Spirit in Mary, lived a perfect life without sin, and suffered an agonizing death on the cross as punishment for our own sins. He was buried and rose again after three days and witnessed to hundreds of people before ascending back to Heaven where He remains to this day until His return.

We believe that the Holy Spirit is a divine Person, equal with God the Father and God the Son and of the same nature. He was active in the creation, He convicts us of sin, He is the agent in the new birth, and He seals, endures, guides, teaches, witnesses, sanctifies, and helps the believer.

We believe that God is sovereign in the giving of all His gifts, and that the gift of evangelist, pastors, and teachers are sufficient for the perfecting of the saints today.

We believe the Biblical account of the creation of the physical universe, angels, and man. We believe that everything was created in six literal 24 hour days without any evolutionary process.

We believe that man was created in innocence and perfection but by voluntary transgression, Adam fell from his sinless and happy state, and all man sinned in him. As a result, all humans are sinners by nature and by conduct, and therefore are under just condemnation without defense or excuse.

We believe that the salvation of sinners is initiated by Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who voluntarily took upon himself the sins of the world. Yet without sin, He honored the divine law by His personal obedience, thus qualifying Himself to be our savior.

We believe that a local church is an organized congregation of immersed believers, associated by covenant of faith and fellowship of the gospel.

We believe in two ordinances of the Christian faith. The first being baptism by submersion only after the acknowledgement of salvation through Christ. It is a public demonstration of faith and is by no means able to save you from your sins. The second ordinance of communion is demonstrated on a monthly basis where believers come together to take part in this ceremony. The bread resembles the body of Jesus Christ that which was broken for us. The cup resembles the blood of Jesus Christ that was poured out for us.

We believe in the pre-millennial return of Christ, and event which can occur at any moment, and that at the moment the dead in Christ shall be raised in glorified bodies, and the living in Christ shall be given glorified bodies without tasting death. All, then, shall be caught up to meet the Lord in the air before the seven years of the Tribulation.

We believe that the only Scriptural marriage is the joining of one man to one woman. No other marriages beside one man and one woman will be performed in the Cornerstone Baptist Church. We believe that no intimate sexual activity be engaged in outside of a marriage between one man and one woman. We believe that any form of homosexuality, lesbianism, bisexuality, bestiality, incest, fornication, adultery, and pornography are sinful perversions of God’s gift of sex. We believe that God disapproves of and forbids any attempt to alter one’s gender by surgery or appearance.
